Toor Dal Recipe 3: Maskai Saaru


Preparation time: 20 Minutes | Cook time: 10 Minutes


Toor dal – 1 Small glass

Turmeric Powder – Pinch

Tomato – 1

Onion – 1

Green Chilli – 1

Coriander Powder / JeeraPepper Powder – 1 Tbsp

Brinjal – 2 Small

Potato – 1

Garlic – 5

Coriander Leaves – ¼ Cup

Water – 3 Glass

Oil – ½ Tbsp

Salt to Taste

For Tempering

Oil – 1 Tbsp

Ghee – ½ Tbsp

Mustard seeds – 1Tbsp

Curry Leaves – 8


  • Wash Toor dal twice and add it to a Pressure cooker. Add 3 glass of water, Turmeric Powder, Oil, Medium Chopped tomato, Medium Chopped Onion, Chopped Green Chiili, Garlic, Potato, Brinjal, Coriander Powder / JeeraPepper Powder, Coriander Leaves and Cook for about 2 whistles.
  • Once dal is Cooked. Take out Excess of water and Veggies to a Vessel. Mash dal Completely and add it to same water in the Vessel. Mix well. Cook for about 2 minutes on medium flame. Add Salt to taste.
  • Tempering: Heat oil and ghee together in a pan. Add Mustard Seeds wait until it Crackle then add Curry Leaves. Switch off the flame and add this on top of cooked dal. Mix well. Add salt if Needed.

Hot Maskai Saaru is Ready to Serve with Rice.
