Brown chickpeas usli (Kadalekalu usli)


Preparation time: 6 Hours | Cook time: 15 Minutes


Brown chickpeas – 1 cup

Onion – 1

Green chilli – 2

Curry leaves – 5

Clove powder – Pinch

Cinnamon powder – Pinch

Turmeric powder – ¼ tbsp

Coriander powder – ½ tbsp

Oil – 2 tbsp

Mustard seeds – ½ tbsp

Coriander leaves – ¼ cup

Salt to taste


  • Soak brown chickpeas for about 6 hours and pressure cook until it becomes soft. Drain water and keep chickpeas aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds wait until it crackle.
  • Add chopped onions, green chilli and curry leaves. Fry until onion turns light brown.
  • Add turmeric powder, clove powder and cinnamon powder. Mix well.
  • Add cooked brown chickpeas, coriander powder and salt. Cook for about 2 minutes.
  • Takeout on to a serving plate and garnish with coriander leaves.

Healthy Brown chickpeas usli is ready to serve.
